After the launch of the Indira Gandhi National Open University (IGNOU) and Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) centres, the city is all set to host a DBMS Career Academy institute.

A wing of the DBMS English School has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with the Madurai Kamraj University, Madurai, which would offer undergraduate and postgraduate courses. The MoU was signed on November 7.

DBMS Career Academy will serve as one of the study centres of the distance education department of the Madurai Kamraj University.

The academy is already got affiliation for its BSc (IT), MSc (IT), BCA and MTech courses from Karnataka State Open University.

But the target group of these simple courses includes those who had to leave higher studies mid-way due to family reasons or work-related problems.

“We hope people who have completed graduation and BEd but could not continue their higher studies as they did not have enough time. They can now pursue higher studies as we will be introducing some new courses, which the existing open university centres do not offer. The students will get the study materials from the university,” said Sudha Swamy, the President of DBMS Career Academy at a newsmeet today.

The classes would start from 2.30 in the afternoon, and would continue till evening. The classes have been scheduled keeping in mind a time that suits the working class interested in pursuing higher studies.

The centre would be operational from the next academic session. The academy will start inviting application forms from December 15.

Those who want to pursue higher studies through distance education in the city need not be completely dependent on Ignou, the only distance education centre in the city till recent years.

The subjects on offer would range from science, commerce and humanities along with a few professional courses such as business administration, retail management and computer applications — all at the undergraduate-level.

“We are a wing of DBMS English School. We want children to join us at kindergarten-level and leave the institution as postgraduates. Based on the success of the course, we plan to offer MPhil and PhD courses also,” said K. Uma, the Principal of the Academy.
