The UK India Education and Research Initiative (UKIERI) was announced by Tony Blair, PM, UK, in 2006 to improve educational links between India and UK ensuring in the long term so that the two nations become each other's partner of choice in education.The initiative is 3 pronged:

  1. Higher Education and Research,
  2. Schools and
  3. Professional and Technical Skills

The School Partnerships Strand of the UKIERI was launched to contribute significantly to the UKIERI's aim of creating a life-long relationship between young people in UK and India and to assist them in meeting their need to live and operate in a global economy. To meet this aim UKIERI facilitated partnerships between clusters of school in India and UK.

From Jamshedpur six schools came together to form the 'Olive' cluster

  1. Hill Top School
  2. Kerala Samajam Model School
  3. Motilal Nehru Public School
  4. Kerala Public School, Kadma
  5. Gulmohur High School and
  6. D.B.M.S. English School

Olive's partner UK cluster is 'Monmouth' from Wales, UK, and comprises four schools:

  1. Gil Wern Junior And Infant School, Monmouthshire. Head Teacher: Roger Guy
  2. Malpas Court Primary School – New Port. Head Teacher: Debra Guy
  3. Maes Yr Haul Primary School – Brigend. Head Teacher: Pam Mahoney
  4. Ysgol  Gynradd  Gymraeg  Garth  Olwg, Pontypridd. Head Teacher: Marilyn A. Tomlinson.

The team from Wales, UK

Eight delegates from Wales visited Jamshedpur from January 12th to 17th, 2009, and there was exchange of information, learning about each other’s cultures, schools and values. The six Principals of the Olive cluster (Jamshedpur) will be making their reciprocal visit to Wales in May–June, 2009.
