Rain, rain go away.

On 12th July, 2011, it was raining cats and dogs. The little ones of Std. I were looking dull, confined within the four walls of the classroom because all work and no play makes Jack a dull boy.

In order to break the monotony of classroom teaching, an indoor game activity was organized for the little ones of Std. I to cheer them up, when they could not go to the playground due to heavy downpour. Here in lies the importance of indoor games. The children were excited and they were eagerly looking forward to the event. Their joy knew no bounds.

Activity based learning is preferred to rote learning in modern education system. The children can clear their concepts better when they involve themselves in activity based learning. Activity based learning is emphasized upon in classroom teaching in D. B. M. S. English School, and to promote this the teachers of Std. I organized this indoor game event. The instructional objective of organizing this event was to co-relate the topic Play and Fun in E.V.E. with the various indoor games which, the children enjoy playing. The difference between indoor and outdoor games was explained to the children. Indoor games are played when, due to some constraints, the children cannot go out in the open air.

The children of Std. I enjoyed the day very much in spite of the inclement weather. The learning outcomes were the development of certain skills in the children. While some were engrossed with the dice which increase d their counting skill, others were managing the striker on the carrom board to enhance their motor skills. Some bright students were glued to the chess board, racking their brains.

‘Snakes and Ladder’ attracted the attention of most of the children. They found it exciting to climb up the ladder and reach the finishing point but at the same time it was depressing to be swallowed by a snake and come back to the starting point.

The Std. I teachers were on their toes to make the event interesting. They too participated in the games and the children were overjoyed. Apart from ludo, chess, carrom, the teachers involved a group of students in the popular ‘name, place, animal and thing’, which in turn enriched their vocabulary. Questionnaire was prepared for the students. There was co-ordination among the teachers which made the event a grand success.

The children were perked-up after the event. They indeed had a gala time.
